2K, commonly known as 2K Games, is an American video game publisher and a wholly owned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. Founded in 2005, the label publishes franchises including NBA 2K, BioShock, Borderlands, Mafia, XCOM and Civilization. The 2K brand name and its visual identity trace back to the Visual Concepts sports game lineup, which was acquired by Take-Two from Sega in January 2005.
Design and History
The 2K logo was created in 2005 when Take-Two Interactive announced the formation of the 2K Games publishing label, following its purchase of Visual Concepts and Kush Games from Sega. The deal included rights to the 2K brand itself, and Take-Two separately announced the formation of 2K Games to publish future sports titles.[1] The original logo remained essentially unchanged for more than 15 years.[2]
The original 2005 mark consisted of a slanted red square angled toward the right, with the company name displayed across two levels. The “2” and “K” characters appear connected in the middle, set in a large, bold sans-serif typeface in white against the bright red background.[3] A version of the emblem with gradients to convey shine was also introduced alongside the simpler matte design.[3]
In 2021, 2K introduced a slightly simplified version of its logo, its only redesign to date. The red square background was straightened and redrawn with slightly softened corners, while the white “2K” lettering was condensed and made smaller, creating a more balanced composition. The red shade was also brightened.[2][4]
The 2K trademark was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in December 2004, with first use recorded in April 2005. The mark is registered to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2K logo does not carry hidden meanings; it is a straightforward emblem intended to highlight the company name. The connected “2” and “K” characters, angled slightly to the right, convey a sense of movement and progress, while the arrangement of the symbols highlights the creative and collaborative nature of the brand.[3]
The white-on-red color combination provides strong contrast. The red background was chosen to convey passion and power, ideas frequently associated with the video game space, while the bold white sans-serif typeface symbolizes professionalism and detail-oriented work.[3]
Typography and Design
The 2K logo uses a bold, italic sans-serif typeface in white. The design is similar to the Helvetica Neue 93 Ext Black font, but the glyphs have been connected in the center between the two levels, giving the logo a distinctive appearance. The connection between the characters demonstrates the collaborative work of the company.[3]
The logo’s color palette has remained consistent since its inception: white (hex #ffffff) and red (hex #ee2722).[3]
