Jio is the telecommunications and digital services brand of Reliance Industries in India. The Jio wordmark and its associated visual identity have drawn attention for their distinctive design choices, including a hidden mirror-image reading and a multi-colour palette that differs from the parent Reliance brand.
Design and History
The Jio logo was introduced in 2015 ahead of the company’s commercial launch. According to a Communications Today retrospective, Jio is the only Reliance company to have its own logo, and Isha Ambani worked with a German designer to create a new mark in eight primary colours, described as the eight festive colours of India, intended to represent the country’s diversity.[1]
One of the most discussed features of the Jio wordmark is its mirror-image quality. Business Today reported that a company insider said the Jio logo is actually a mirror image of the word “oil,” reflecting Reliance’s journey from oil drilling to data mining.[2] The Economic Times similarly noted that the logo is a mirror image of the word “oil,” a sign of what the company sought in its foray into telecom, with Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani describing data as “the new oil.”[3]
In 2024, Jio Studios, the entertainment division of Reliance Industries, unveiled a new moving logo designed by White Turtle Studios, part of the Trailer Park Group.[4] The animation begins with a single spark from a ball of energy that is revealed as Jio, symbolizing the genesis of an idea, before transitioning into mandala designs and culminating in a golden lotus.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Jio Studios moving logo carries documented symbolic meaning. The spark represents the birth of an idea, the mandala designs symbolize the universe in its ideal form, and the golden lotus is described as a timeless Indian symbol of purity, resilience and renewal, associated with Brahma, the creator of the Universe.[6] The moving dials of the mandala bring together Indian languages and musical notes, and the logo uses just two colours, black and gold, until the final frame.[5] Jyoti Deshpande, President of Media and Content Business at Reliance Industries, said the logo “celebrates our Indianness” and “honours our rich heritage but also symbolizes our ambition to keep pushing boundaries with scale and innovation.”[6]
Typography and Design
The Jio Studios logo was crafted by White Turtle Studios, with Ankit Bhatia and Trailer Park Group’s Tamagna Ghosh speaking about the creative journey behind the design.[4] The logo is accompanied by a signature tune layered with numerous Indian instruments, with the sound of a sitar accompanying the final crescendo as the Jio Studios logo emerges.[5]
