Amazon Studios, launched by Amazon.com in November 2010, is the company’s film and television production division. Originally established as an online business inviting filmmakers and screenwriters to submit scripts and test movies for development, it has since grown into a major entertainment studio. In 2023, following Amazon’s acquisition of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the division was renamed Amazon MGM Studios. The visual identity of the studio has evolved through several distinct phases, from a simple print wordmark to elaborate animated film idents.
Design and History
The earliest Amazon Studios identity was a straightforward typographic print logo used from 2010 to 2019. This text-based mark spelled out “amazon studios” in lowercase letters, a restrained approach that connected the studio to its parent brand primarily through the name itself. The wordmark was designed to work across print and promotional contexts rather than as an on-screen animation.
For the launch of Amazon Studios and its early Amazon Originals programming, the agency eyeball created the first logo animations and sonic identities. Alex Moulton served as Executive Creative Director for the project, with Ben Hill as designer and Michael Picton and Alex Moulton composing the music. The audio mnemonic created for this launch proved durable, with a slightly updated version still accompanying the Amazon Original opener years later. [1]
In 2016, Amazon Studios introduced a new animated logo for its theatrical films. The 22-second animation, created by the agency Ant Farm with design work by Antenna Creative, begins by drawing the viewer into the pages of a high-tech pop-up book. The sequence depicts a city street that unrolls like a red carpet before the camera comes to rest on the Amazon Studios logo displayed on a movie theater marquee. The ident was produced in 5K resolution and first appeared before the Oscar-winning film Manchester by the Sea. [2] [3]
Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, the studio was renamed Amazon MGM Studios in 2023. This change also affected the on-screen identity: the 2016 animated Amazon Studios logo, designed by Monster Creative, was retired, and starting in September 2023 all film productions began opening with the 2021 MGM Leo the Lion logo designed by Baked Studios. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2016 animated ident drew directly on Amazon’s origins. Antenna Creative designed a logo that “started where Amazon began: a book,” with the pop-up book format serving as the entry point into the animated sequence. The imagery of a city street and a movie theater marquee reinforced the studio’s ambition to deliver films to audiences in theaters. [3]
The print wordmark itself carried no elaborate symbolism, relying instead on the recognizable Amazon name in a simple lowercase treatment. This minimal approach allowed the studio’s identity to remain flexible across the varied contexts where production company logos appear, from opening credits to promotional materials.
Typography and Design
Documented typographic details for the Amazon Studios identity are limited. The on-screen logo used in the 2016 animated ident displayed the studio name on a movie theater marquee, rendered in a style consistent with theatrical presentation. The earlier print wordmark used a lowercase sans-serif treatment, but no official typeface specification has been publicly documented in the available sources.
The 2016 animated ident was a full-CG production rendered in 5K resolution, a technical achievement noted in coverage of its creation. The sequence was produced using Qube! render farm management software from PipelineFX, which coordinated the complex rendering required for the detailed pop-up book animation. [2]
