Banpresto is a Japanese brand known for its amusement prizes, particularly figures and plush toys designed for crane games and similar arcade machines. Today, Banpresto operates as a category brand under BANDAI SPIRITS CO., LTD., which was established in 2018 to handle products geared toward a mature fan base, including plastic models, figures, character lottery, and Banpresto amusement prizes.[1] The brand’s official website describes it as the “Banpresto brand” for planning, developing, and selling amusement prizes obtainable from crane games.[2]
Design and History
The Banpresto logo is built around a distinctive black mark that resembles a pair of glasses or an eye mask. The symbol is widely recognized among fans, and the company has long been nicknamed “glasses company” (眼镜社) in Chinese-speaking communities because of this trademark design.[3] The mark also appears in the opening sequences of many Banpresto video games, where it is accompanied by a signature sound effect.[4]
The glasses-shaped symbol is a stylized representation of the first letter of the company name, “B,” rotated horizontally. According to a brand description published by Tokyo Otaku Mode, a licensed retailer of Banpresto products, the logo represents the letter “B,” while its glasses shape symbolizes the company’s “constant curiosity and persistence to keep our eyes fixed on the future in search of new discoveries.”[5]
Banpresto was originally founded in April 1977 as Hoei Sangyo Co., Ltd., and was renamed Coreland in 1982 before becoming Banpresto.[6] The company name combines “ban” from Bandai and “presto,” a musical term meaning “quick tempo.”[3] In April 2019, Banpresto was merged into BANDAI SPIRITS, and its trademark continued to be used by the new entity.[3]
The Banpresto logo has also appeared in the company’s own media properties. The SRX robot from the Super Robot Wars series features camera goggles modeled after the Banpresto logo, a design choice attributed to mechanical designer Hajime Katoki.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Banpresto logo’s glasses-like form carries a documented meaning tied to the company’s philosophy. The symbol represents the letter “B” for Banpresto, and its glasses shape conveys the idea of looking at the world with interest and curiosity, keeping an eye on trends and market movements, and maintaining a forward-looking perspective in search of new discoveries.[5] The mark has also been described as resembling the dual-eye design of the Gundam franchise, a visual association that has contributed to its recognition among anime and game fans.[8]
