Cineplex Entertainment is Canada’s largest film exhibitor, operating movie theatres and location-based entertainment venues across the country. The company traces its current corporate form to 2005, when Cineplex Galaxy Income Fund renamed its operating entity Cineplex Entertainment after completing its acquisition of Famous Players Theatres; in 2011, Cineplex Galaxy became Cineplex Inc. [1]
Design and History
The Cineplex logo has remained visually consistent for decades. A design commentary from Chargefield, a Canadian movie poster studio, notes that the mark “hasn’t changed that much” since the 1980s and 1990s, with oval curves representing ancient Greek and Roman odeon seating, essentially a smaller coliseum, as the main distinguishing feature. The same commentary observes that the symmetrically split curves resemble film festival laurels, lending an air of prestige to the brand. [2]
In 2021, Cineplex launched a national brand campaign titled “Where Escape Begins,” developed by creative agency Zulu Alpha Kilo alongside Cineplex’s in-house marketing team. The campaign was reflected across all consumer touchpoints, including Cineplex’s social channels, interior digital media, and exterior banners at its locations across Canada. [3]
Around the same period, Cineplex’s in-house design team undertook a brand refresh. Designer Andrea Zadro describes the project as a response to years of added programs that had complicated the brand’s look and feel. The team identified areas needing refinement: the logo needed modularity and flexibility, the palette needed paring down, and the font system needed to be clearly defined. The result was a new brand deck with a new font system, icons, and illustration style, designed to keep the brand consistent while staying true to its iconic roots. The project credits Andrea Zadro and Carolina Sattie as designers and art directors, with Mike Lucas as creative director. [4]
Carolina Sattie’s portfolio describes the same in-house project as establishing a flexible and responsive logo, one adept at adapting its form to suit various contexts and applications while ensuring brand recognition and continuity. [5]
In March 2023, Cineplex Entertainment Limited Partnership filed two new logo trademark applications with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, both filed on March 8, 2023. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The oval curves in the Cineplex mark reference ancient Greek and Roman odeon seating, a smaller coliseum used for musical performances. The symmetrically split curves also evoke film festival laurels, which lends the brand an air of prestige. [2]
Typography and Design
Documentation of the brand refresh indicates that the font system was a specific focus of the redesign effort. The in-house team identified that the font system “needed to be clearly defined” and delivered a new font system as part of the updated brand deck. [4] The specific typeface used in the current logo has not been publicly documented in the available sources.
