AlphaDream Corporation, Ltd. was a Japanese video game development studio based in Tokyo, founded on January 12, 2000, and known for creating the Mario & Luigi RPG series in partnership with Nintendo. The company was established by Tetsuo Mizuno, a former president of Square, together with former Square staff including Chihiro Fujioka, who had directed Super Mario RPG. AlphaDream declared bankruptcy on October 1, 2019, after accumulating debts of approximately 465 million yen as of March 2018, and the company ceased to exist on February 28, 2020. [1] [2]
Design and History
The AlphaDream logo was used from the company’s founding in 2000 until its dissolution in 2019. [3] The mark featured four orbs: three blue and one red, with the blue orbs connected to one another while the red orb stood separate. This arrangement was especially visible in the logo’s animation, which showed the blue orbs connecting while the red one remained apart. [4]
The company was originally known as AlphaStar before adopting the AlphaDream name. [2] The studio’s official website, alphadream.co.jp, went offline shortly after the bankruptcy announcement on October 2, 2019. [1]
Meaning and Symbolism
No official documentation from AlphaDream has been found that explains the intended meaning of the logo’s colors or the arrangement of its orbs. The visual distinction between the connected blue orbs and the separate red orb is documented, but the company never publicly stated what these elements were meant to represent. [4]
