HBO Now was an American subscription video-on-demand streaming service operated by Home Box Office, Inc. that offered standalone access to HBO’s programming without a cable or satellite subscription. Announced on March 9, 2015, and launched on April 7, 2015, the service was positioned as a direct-to-consumer alternative to the cable-authenticated HBO Go app, with a monthly price of $14.99.[1]
Design and History
The HBO Now wordmark was registered as a trademark by Home Box Office, Inc. on March 9, 2015, the same day the service was publicly announced at Apple’s Spring Forward event.[2][1] The official trademark description states that the mark consists of “HBO” design with a stylized bullet “O,” with the adjacent word “NOW” in large type.[2] The design was also registered with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office as a figurative mark.[3]
The branding work for HBO Now was handled by SJI Associates, a New York-based creative firm that worked on the naming, branding, and marketing for HBO’s streaming services, including HBO Go, HBO Now, and HBO Max.[4]
HBO Now operated for just over five years. By February 2018, HBO reported more than 5 million online streaming subscribers across its various digital outlets, including HBO Now, Amazon Channels, DirecTV Now, and Sony Vue.[5] The service was succeeded by HBO Max, which launched on May 27, 2020, with a distinct purple backdrop and the familiar HBO logo reading “HBO Max.”[6]
Following the HBO Max launch, WarnerMedia announced in June 2020 that the HBO Now app and desktop experience would be rebranded as simply “HBO,” a change that rolled out over the following months on platforms where HBO Max was not yet available, including Roku and Amazon Fire TV.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The HBO Now mark incorporated the established HBO wordmark with its stylized bullet “O,” a design element carried over from the parent brand’s visual identity.[2] The trademark registration also lists design codes for two concentric circles, reflecting the circular bullet element within the “O.”[8] The service’s app icon used a black-and-white color scheme, consistent with HBO’s broader brand palette.[6]
Typography and Design
The HBO Now logo paired the “HBO” wordmark with the adjacent word “NOW” set in large type, as documented in the official trademark filing.[2] The mark was registered in two separate filings: one covering downloadable mobile software applications and another covering entertainment services.[8][2]
