Maxis is an American video game developer and a division of Electronic Arts (EA), founded in 1987 by Will Wright and Jeff Braun.[1] The studio is best known for simulation franchises including SimCity, The Sims, and Spore.[1] Maxis became part of Electronic Arts in 1997.[1]
Design and History
Maxis has undergone two major logo changes since its founding. The original logo, used from 1987 through 2012, featured a black semicircle representing a planet alongside a colorful Maxis wordmark.[2] In 2012, at the Game Developers Conference, EA announced a new SimCity game along with a new logo for the Maxis brand.[3] That 2012 update changed the font and repositioned the semicircle, but the core concept of the studio name set within a black semicircle remained intact.[2]
In March 2022, Maxis underwent a complete rebranding, marking the most drastic change to the logo since 1987.[4] The new identity abandoned the planet semicircle entirely, replacing it with a pair of lightbulbs whose silhouettes form a heart shape.[2] The rebranding coincided with the studio’s 35th anniversary and was accompanied by a new website design and promotional video.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2022 logo is described as a hexagonal lightbulb containing green, blue, yellow, orange, and purple colors.[6] The lightbulb motif replaced the planet symbol that had been part of the studio’s identity for decades.[2] The new logo also resembles the updated icon used for the Gallery in The Sims 4, which was introduced in a game update before the rebranding was announced.[7]
Typography and Design
The 2022 rebranding changed the studio’s wordmark to a more sans-serif, cut-style font while retaining the studio’s signature colors.[2] The previous 2012 logo had used a different typeface with the semicircle element, and the 2022 version completely abandoned that earlier style.[8]
