Pony Canyon Inc. is a Japanese entertainment company headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, producing music, video, anime and film content. Its current corporate brand logo, introduced in October 2016 to mark the company’s 50th anniversary, is known as the “PC Pony Canyon” mark and remains the standard logo in use today.[1]
Design and History
The current Pony Canyon logo combines an exclamation mark with the letters “P” and “C.” According to the company’s official brand page, the design concept was built on the desire to remain a company that delivers surprise and inspiration: the exclamation point “!” is combined with the P and C of PONY CANYON to create a design that is easy for anyone to remember, clear and approachable.[2]
Before this mark, Pony Canyon’s visual identity went through several distinct phases. From October 1982, the company adopted a unified geometric logo popularly called the “PC (Pac-Man) mark,” which had previously differed by record label. In 1986, an “eye mark” was added, and the corporate logotype was changed to the Fujisankei Group unified standard typeface designed by Yuji Baba.[1]
In 2004, a visual image (VI) featuring three circles in black, gray and red from left to right was introduced alongside the existing mark. This VI was used primarily for consumer-facing materials such as products and promotions.[1]
In April 2023, Pony Canyon established a new tagline, “Culture, Future, Adventure,” and a corporate statement, accompanied by a renewal of its corporate website. The tagline logo mark was designed as a simple, smart flag shape, expressing a flexible, non-rigid posture of riding the wind and waves and creating flow. The flag is described as representing a mark, will, declaration, companions and support, binding the three words together and expressing Pony Canyon setting out on an adventure with the flag raised.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Red has been a defining element of Pony Canyon’s identity. According to the company’s official brand page, the brand color red began appearing in the logo in 1982. This “Pony Canyon Red” has been continually updated over time alongside changes in logo design and eras.[2]
The current logo’s exclamation mark motif directly reflects the company’s stated ambition to keep providing surprise and inspiration to its audiences.[2]
Typography and Design
In 1986, the corporate logotype was changed to the Fujisankei Group unified standard typeface designed by Yuji Baba, a noted Japanese graphic designer. This standard typeface was applied across the Fujisankei Communications Group’s corporate identities.[1]
For the 2023 tagline logo, the company described the design as “smart and simple,” using a flag motif to convey a flexible posture without rigidity.[3]
