Napster is a music streaming service that traces its roots to the peer-to-peer file-sharing software launched in 1999. The brand’s visual identity has centered on a cat wearing headphones, a mascot that has evolved through several ownership changes and redesigns over more than two decades.
Design and History
The original Napster logo was designed in 1999 by Sam Hanks, who was asked by founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker to create a brand and website for their software. Hanks described the direction from Parker as “maybe having a cat run across the screen,” which led to the concept of “a cool cat simply listening to music.” The cat mascot was partly a response to Lycos using a dog in its advertising at the time.[1][2]
After Napster was shut down in the U.S. in 2001, the brand was acquired by Roxio and later by Best Buy, with the name and logo continuing to be used for a paid music service.[3] In 2011, Rhapsody announced plans to rebrand Napster under the Rhapsody name, but by 2016 the two brands were instead united under the Napster name and visual identity, with Rhapsody being retired.[4][5]
On June 8, 2022, Napster introduced a new logo, marking the first time in the brand’s history that the mascot’s facial features were removed. The cat’s eyes, nose, and mouth were eliminated, leaving only the outline of pointed ears and headphones. The icon was redrawn in a simplified, modern style, and the new color palette adopted a bright electric blue.[6][7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The original cat mascot was intended to give the peer-to-peer software “a friendly expression of love for music, while understanding its devilish nature,” according to designer Sam Hanks. He noted that the mark allowed users to “hide behind a collective mask” during the early days of internet file-sharing culture.[1]
The 2022 redesign stripped the mascot down to its essential silhouette, removing the facial expression entirely. The simplified cat head with headphones, rendered in bright electric blue, was described as adding distinctiveness and a modern, cool aesthetic to the brand.[6]
