Penny Royal Films is a UK-based collaborative production studio offering live action, motion graphics, sound, interactive design, branding and concept development services to the film, television and online industries.[1] The company is described as a production company leading the field in animation, visual effects and direction for film, television and online.[2]

Design and History

In 2012, London-based graphic design studio Alphabetical developed a new visual identity for Penny Royal Films.[1] The identity was built around a stencil-cut PR monogram combining the company’s initials, finished with a copper foil print treatment.[1]

According to Alphabetical, the design was inspired by the humble penny piece. The studio created a monogram logo in copper foil that appeared at the same size as a penny coin across all applications, including business cards, stationery, showreel packaging, marketing announcements and online at www.pennyroyal.tv.[1][3]

The project was recognised by D&AD, appearing in the organisation’s awards archive for Penny Royal Films.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The logo mark balances the initials P and R to create a monogram, drawing direct reference from the penny piece through its copper foil finish and penny-sized application across collateral.[2] The single-line weight, stencil-cut elements and rounded terminals of the monogram give it a utilitarian yet contemporary sensibility, while the copper foil treatment delivers a warmth and classic aesthetic that draws reference from a freshly minted one penny piece.[1]

Typography and Design

The identity pairs the heavy monogram with a lighter, well-spaced and vertically stacked sans-serif logotype, which introduces contrast and finer detail against the larger proportions of the monogram.[1] The monogram itself features a single-line weight with stencil-cut elements and rounded terminals.[1]
