Riot Games, Inc. is an American video game developer and publisher founded in 2006, best known for creating League of Legends. The company’s visual identity centers on a clenched fist mark, often called the “Riot Fist,” paired with a wordmark. The logo has undergone two significant updates since its creation, most recently in 2022.
Design and History
The original Riot Games logo was drawn by the company’s first art director and featured the word “RIOT” in a graffiti-tag style with a small fist motif. It remained in use from 2006 until 2019. According to Riot, the original design was created before small-screen devices and modern platforms became common, and the company eventually recognized that the logo was difficult to read at small sizes and across different contexts. [1] [2]
In April 2019, Riot unveiled a refreshed logo after roughly a year of work. The new design separated the fist from the wordmark, allowing the fist to work as a standalone symbol. The fist was also changed from a left hand to a right hand so that it would visually mirror the letter “R” in the Riot Games wordmark when placed side by side. Riot stated that the new logo was designed in close collaboration with the company’s co-founders and CEO, and that it aimed to capture the spirit of the original while updating it for modern use. [2] [3]
In February 2022, Riot announced another logo update, changing the Riot Games typography and making slight adjustments to the fist icon. The company said the change was part of building a more cohesive visual system, which also included the creation of new assets such as custom typography. Riot noted that while the wordmark was made more modern, it wanted to retain the original spirit of the fist and make clear that “Riot GAMES” remain at the company’s core. [4] [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The clenched fist has been part of Riot’s identity since the company’s founding. In Riot’s 2019 announcement, the company described the fist as the core of the Riot Games identity, which is why it was separated from the wordmark to remain recognizable even at small sizes. [2]
In 2024, Stink Studios, which developed an expanded brand design system for Riot, described the fist as a “fist bump” and elevated it to “a living symbol of approval, and a fist bump to the community.” The fist-bump logo, animated logos, and custom fists were designed by the illustration studio Ilovedust. [6] [7]
Typography and Design
Riot’s 2019 logo refresh introduced a cleaner, more angular wordmark that retained a hand-drawn quality. The fist was designed to mirror the “R” of Riot Games. [1]
The 2022 update changed the typography further, with the letters losing rounded terminals in favor of a more angular, “strict” typeface. The brand’s signature red was also brightened to a more vivid shade. [8]
Riot’s expanded brand design system, developed by Stink Studios and rolled out beginning in 2024, uses the company’s custom Riot Sans typeface designed by the type foundry Colophon. The core color palette is anchored in “Riot Red,” which has been expanded with complementary tones. [6] [9]
