BuzzFeed, Inc. is a digital media company founded in 2006 and headquartered in New York City, known for distributing news and entertainment content across its own platforms and third-party social networks.[1] The company’s visual identity centers on a red wordmark that has remained a consistent signature across its evolution from a viral content lab into a diversified media business.
Design and History
The BuzzFeed logo is a wordmark built around the company name, rendered in red. The current version, in use since 2019, preserves the original structure of the mark while refining individual letterforms. The “U” and “D” were changed to lowercase to appear more harmonious, and the two horizontal strokes of the “F” were adjusted to equal length.[2] The wordmark is designed to work across multiple platforms, including square and circular social media formats, and can appear in reverse colors, such as white lettering on a red background.[3]
BuzzFeed’s logo has been closely tied to its “trending arrow” icon, a jagged upward-pointing arrow associated with the brand’s focus on viral and trending content. In 2018, BuzzFeed UK introduced a new logo and bespoke typeface designed by London-based art director Tim Lane, BuzzFeed’s first in-house art director outside the US.[4] Lane drew elements from the iconic BuzzFeed trending arrow to create the typeface, explaining that “the angles and the weight of each letterform are drawn from the arrow.”[5] During the design process, the team considered paring the logo down to “BF UK” but decided it strayed too far from the main brand.[5]
In 2018, BuzzFeed News also received a distinct identity separate from the parent brand. The news division launched a new logo mark developed with typographer Tal Leming of Type Supply, featuring a serifed “BuzzFeed News” wordmark with a red dot in place of the “N” stem.[6] The redesign was a collaboration between the in-house News Art Department and the product design team, aimed at drawing a clearer distinction between BuzzFeed’s entertainment content and its serious journalism.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The BuzzFeed logo’s red color is a defining element of the brand. Tim Lane described returning the UK logo to “BuzzFeed red” as part of the 2018 refresh,[8] and the color has been described as the classic BuzzFeed red in coverage of the redesign.[9] The trending arrow, which inspired the UK typeface, reflects the organization’s theme of “upwards trending” news.[9]
Typography and Design
The BuzzFeed wordmark has been associated with Proxima Nova SemiBold, a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Mark Simonson.[3] The 2019 update refined the typography while maintaining the brand’s bold character.[2]
For the BuzzFeed News identity, the typographic system paired Pensum Pro, a serif typeface from TypeMates, with Basier Square from Atipo, giving the news brand a clean and unified voice distinct from the parent site’s sans-serif look.[10] Tal Leming of Type Supply developed distinctive letterforms for the BuzzFeed News wordmark that harmonize with Pensum Pro.[11]
