Opticon

Opticon is a name shared by several unrelated companies, including a barcode scanner manufacturer founded in 1976. American graphic designer Matthew Leibowitz (1918–1974) has an undated Opticon letterhead file in his papers at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Opticon is a name shared by several unrelated companies, which makes tracing a single visual identity challenging. The most prominent brand using this name today is the barcode scanner manufacturer founded in 1976, but the logo most often associated with the name in design history circles is a letterhead created by American graphic designer Matthew Leibowitz (1918–1974).

Design and History

Matthew Leibowitz was a prolific American graphic designer who earned over 260 gold medals in design during his career and held solo exhibitions in Great Britain, France, Germany and Japan.[1] His papers, held at the Rochester Institute of Technology, include a file for “Opticon, undated; letterhead” dated within the collection’s range of 1937 to 1976.[2] The file is part of a sub-series containing magazine covers, advertisement tear sheets, annual reports, letterhead and promotional materials.[2]

The RIT archive record does not specify a creation date for the Opticon letterhead, nor does it identify the client company or describe the design itself. The collection’s major clients included IBM, Caedmon Records, Sharp and Dohme, Otis and Philip Morris, but Opticon is not listed among them.[3]

No verifiable source confirms that Leibowitz designed a logo for the barcode scanner company Opticon, which was founded in 1976, two years after the designer’s death.[4] The undated letterhead in his archive may relate to a different, earlier company using the Opticon name.

Meaning and Symbolism

Because the archive record provides no description of the Opticon letterhead artwork, no documented symbolism or design intent can be verified. Claims that the mark suggests “precision,” “clarity” or healthcare values are not supported by any primary source and should be treated as speculation.

The current barcode scanner company Opticon, a global group comprising OPTO Electronics, Opticon Sensors Europe BV and Opticon Inc., has used various logos over its history.[4] A 2019 company blog post noted that a new version of its software included “the new Opticon logo,” indicating a recent visual update, though no design details were provided.[5]
