Saddleback Medical Center, formerly Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, is a full-service, nonprofit hospital in Laguna Hills, California, operated by MemorialCare Health System.[1] The facility opened in 1974 as Saddleback Community Hospital, built with donations collected by residents of Laguna Woods Village beginning in 1969.[2] Today, the hospital operates under the MemorialCare parent brand, and its visual identity follows the MemorialCare system logo rather than a standalone Saddleback mark.
Design and History
Saddleback Medical Center does not maintain an independent logo. Instead, it uses the MemorialCare system identity, pairing the MemorialCare logo with the facility’s full name. A signage application submitted to the City of Laguna Hills documents this transition, noting that the hospital’s exterior signs changed “from a logo symbol only to MemorialCare + Logo,” with the new signage offering “the full name of the facility with the MemorialCare logo to easily identify the hospital and medical facility.”[3] The same document states that the existing and new logos “remain close in size,” indicating a continuity of scale during the rebranding.[4]
The hospital’s legal name remains Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, though it does business as MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center.[5] This dual naming reflects the facility’s position within the larger MemorialCare system, which also operates other Southern California hospitals under the same parent identity.
Meaning and Symbolism
Because Saddleback Medical Center uses the MemorialCare system logo, the documented symbolism applies to the parent mark. MemorialCare describes its logo as a “living relationships” mark, and in the logotype, “the purple color used in ‘Memorial’ represents the strength and stability of our heritage, while the green color used in ‘Care’ expresses positive growth and life.”[6] The preferred version of the logo is the 3-Color Positive format, and the symbol includes negative space as part of its design.[6]
Typography and Design
MemorialCare’s brand guidelines describe the logotype as “a custom-rendered font based on Museo.”[6] The system’s full brand guidelines also specify rules for logo usage, including prohibitions on changing the logo’s color, altering the tree of life mark, stretching or skewing the logo, and adding drop shadows, outlines, or other visual effects.[7] These guidelines govern how the Saddleback campus applies the MemorialCare identity across signage and communications.
