MassMutual, formally Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, is a mutual life insurance and financial services firm founded in 1851 and headquartered in Springfield, Massachusetts. The company’s visual identity has undergone two significant redesigns in the modern era, most recently in 2017 when it replaced its long-running “blue chip” mark with a dotted “M” symbol.
Design and History
MassMutual’s current logo, introduced in May 2017 on the company’s 166th anniversary, features a stylized letter “M” formed by five dots in a bold blue colorway. The visual identity was created by The Working Assembly, a boutique design studio co-founded by Jolene Delisle and Lawrence O’Toole, with overall strategy and creative direction handled by advertising agency Johannes Leonardo. The refresh also included a new multi-channel advertising campaign and a redesigned website. The company described the new positioning as celebrating “the gift of interdependence,” with the tagline “Live Mutual.” [1] [2]
The 2017 mark replaced what was dubbed the “blue chip” logo, which had been in use since 1995. That earlier identity was adopted when MassMutual merged with Connecticut Mutual, and it drew on Connecticut Mutual’s long-standing “Blue Chip Company” trademark. The merger was structured to preserve part of the Connecticut identity, with the combined company marketing itself as “MassMutual/The Blue Chip Company,” taking the blue color and typeface of Connecticut Mutual. [3] [4]
According to MassMutual’s own communications, the 2017 refresh was the company’s first logo update since 2007. The Working Assembly noted that in developing the new mark, the team looked back at MassMutual’s history as a “blue chip” company, which had inspired the previous several iterations of the brand mark, and sought to bring that motif and the color blue into the new design. The designers also discovered that the dot arrangement created an implied “M,” which helped the mark gain favor with both clients and consumers. [5] [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
MassMutual’s official brand guidelines state that the dots in the logo “represent people from communities large and small coming together to secure their future and protect the people who matter most.” The company also described the dots as symbolic of the community of people that MassMutual helps to connect. The carefully rounded corners of the mark are described in the brand guidelines as “friendly and beautiful,” intended to humanize the company and forge connections with audiences. [7] [1]
MassMutual’s own materials describe the new logo as inspiring “solidarity and cooperation,” expressing the brand “in a more clean and simple way that represents the foundation of mutuality.” The company stated the mark conveys that it is “a company where people rely on people and everyone feels more protected.” [8]
Typography and Design
MassMutual’s 2017 brand refresh introduced rounded letterforms in the wordmark, which the company said were meant to convey concepts like clear, simple, transparent and trustworthy. The new logo and the round lines of the new font were part of a broader effort to make the mark feel modern and digital-friendly while resonating with younger audiences. [3] [6]
The Working Assembly noted that part of the brief was to make the mark “not only functional in these digital times, but also to feel modern,” while still providing the company with a mark that “did not abandon all heritage, yet was completely new, ownable and unique in the space.” [6]
