Nürnberger Versicherung is a German insurance group headquartered in Nuremberg, founded in 1884. Its visual identity is built around a word-mark logo whose central element is the silhouette of Nuremberg Castle (Kaiserburg), a reference to the company’s hometown that has been part of the mark since 1928.[1]
Design and History
Since 1928, the company has used the silhouette of Nuremberg Castle in its signet.[1] In 1959, the company adopted the slogan “Schutz und Sicherheit im Zeichen der Burg” (“Protection and security under the sign of the castle”).[1]
In December 2016, Nürnberger Versicherung announced a refreshed brand identity, to be introduced progressively from 2017. The company described the new corporate design as a further development of the previous visual identity rather than a complete departure.[2] The Kaiserburg remained the core element of the logo, though rendered in a more stylized form than before. The company said the new word-mark “connects origin and future.”[2]
The redesign was created by the Munich-based brand agency Martin et Karczinski, which had been the corporate lead agency for Nürnberger Versicherung since September 2016.[2] The agency’s CEO, Peter Martin, said the team “made the visual identity fit for digital challenges.”[3]
The relaunch also included a sharpened slogan: “Schutz und Sicherheit. Seit 1884.” (“Protection and security. Since 1884.”), replacing the earlier “Schutz und Sicherheit im Zeichen der Burg.”[3] The Austrian branch of the group noted that after more than three decades in which the visual identity had changed only slightly, it was time to bring the public appearance into a contemporary form.[4]
The relaunched brand identity received a Special Mention in the Brand Identity category at the German Design Award.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Kaiserburg silhouette ties the logo directly to the city of Nuremberg, where the company was founded in 1884 and where it remains headquartered.[1] The castle motif has been described by the company as connecting “origin and future,” linking the group’s heritage with its modern positioning.[2]
Typography and Design
As part of the 2016 relaunch, the company’s typography was modernized and the in-house font was redesigned.[3] The corporate color blue was modified, and the color spectrum was expanded with additional values such as rose.[3] The modernized house font also came to characterize the word-mark itself.[6]
