Optum is the health services business platform of UnitedHealth Group, formed in 2011 as a master brand to unify the company’s health services offerings. The Optum visual identity has undergone two distinct phases: an emblem-based logo introduced at the brand’s founding, and a simplified orange wordmark adopted in a 2022 brand update.

Design and History

UnitedHealth Group announced the Optum master brand in April 2011, consolidating its health services businesses under one name. OptumHealth retained its name, while Ingenix became OptumInsight and Prescription Solutions became OptumRx.[1]

The original Optum logo, filed as a trademark in February 2011, consisted of the word “OPTUM” in brown alongside a curved diamond shape with smaller diamond shapes set within its borders. The design appeared in light orange, orange, yellow, dark yellow, light brown, gray, and light gray.[2] The consulting firm Prophet developed the original logo and visual system, bringing together three distinct businesses under a new brand identity.[3]

In late 2021, Optum filed a new trademark application for a mark described as “the word OPTUM in a stylized font in the color orange,” with orange claimed as a feature of the mark.[4] The updated branding, described as a new wordmark with a refreshed color scheme, was rolled out by the end of 2022.[5] The new identity removed the emblem, leaving a standalone orange wordmark.

Optum has continued to migrate subsidiary brands to the standard Optum logo. In 2024, U.S. Behavioral Health Plan, California, doing business as OptumHealth Behavioral Solutions, announced it would begin using the standard Optum orange logo in place of the OptumHealth logo on communications and materials, with the transition continuing on a rolling basis through 2024 and 2025.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

Optum’s own communications describe the orange logo as publicly illustrating the company’s “continuing mission to optimize the health and well-being of our clients and members.”[6] The 2022 brand update was described by Optum as satisfying “all the existing expectations of Optum’s mission and purpose while simultaneously moving the brand forward.”[5]

Typography and Design

The current Optum mark is a stylized wordmark in orange, with the color claimed as a feature of the trademark.[7] The original 2011 logo paired the wordmark with a curved diamond emblem built from smaller diamond shapes in a multi-color palette of oranges, yellows, and grays.[2]
