Swiss Re, the Zurich-based reinsurance group founded in 1863, has used a series of distinct corporate marks over its history. The company’s official brand page documents five named logo eras, from the 19th-century “Swiss Cross” stamp to the current “Power Symbol” introduced in 2013.[1]
Design and History
Swiss Re’s first reinsurance treaties were affixed with a company stamp featuring a Swiss Cross. In the early 1900s, the shape of the symbol became circular. During the 1950s, the company’s Zurich headquarters, referred to as the “Altbau,” appeared on the covers of annual reports. For the company’s 100-year anniversary in 1960, a logo was designed with an S and R as mirror images.[1]
In 1995, Swiss Re introduced an abstract logo in its signature “Lake” colour, a mark the company calls the “Pillars.”[1] This logo, first introduced in the 1990s, was tweaked for the 2013 redesign.[2]
On 19 December 2013, the day of its official 150-year anniversary, Swiss Re unveiled a new brand strategy and a modernised logo.[3] The company described the change as modernising its logo “to make it a more powerful and distinct symbol in markets worldwide.”[3] The new identity was developed with the consultancy Prophet.[2] Swiss Re officially refers to the 2013 mark as the “Power Symbol.”[1]
The 2013 redesign accompanied a broader brand repositioning. Swiss Re’s Group CEO at the time, Michel M. Liès, said the company had taken its anniversary “as the occasion to review our brand positioning and launch a new brand promise: ‘We’re smarter together’.”[3] The Board of Directors and Group Executive Committee also endorsed a “one-brand” strategy for the entire group.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Swiss Re’s official announcement, the known pillars of the logo “continue to stand for stability,” while the new roundel “expresses customer centricity and worldliness.”[3] The company’s brand page states that the logo is “the visual representation of our Swiss values: reliability, precision, and collaboration.”[1]
Typography and Design
The 2013 identity retained the “Lake” company colour, although the colour palette was also extended.[2] Swiss Re’s official brand history describes the 1995 “Pillars” logo as an abstract mark in this signature “Lake” colour.[1]
In a later brand evolution, Prophet partnered with Swiss Re to redefine its brand strategy, including a refreshed brand positioning and an evolved visual identity, along with a first-in-kind audio brand. This work was awarded a Red Dot Design Award in 2022 and a German Brand Award in 2023.[4]
