Allegro is a Polish e-commerce marketplace founded in 1999 in Poznań, and it operates one of the largest online shopping platforms in Central and Eastern Europe. The company’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases since its launch, with each iteration refining the wordmark while retaining a consistent yellow-orange color palette.
Design and History
The first Allegro logo, introduced in 1999, was a simple wordmark with rounded letterforms in yellow surrounded by a navy border. After the company was acquired by British firm QXL.com PLC in March 2000, the website and its logo were changed again. In 2003, a new mark appeared with refreshed typography and the addition of a distinctive hand-shaped symbol, often referred to as a “paw” or “łapka” in Polish. This iteration marked the first time the wordmark appeared in orange, and it was also the only version of the logo set in italics. [1]
In 2009, Allegro introduced a restyled logotype, which the company described as a “restylization” intended to refresh the brand. The change replaced the capital initial letter with a lowercase one and introduced more rounded letterforms. Marcin Tarent, then Multimedia Manager at Allegro, said the new logo was “the first step towards creating a new Corporate Identity” for a brand that was “young and dynamic” while holding a strong market position. The hand symbol received a more dimensional, embossed treatment, and the color palette remained consistent with previous versions. The change was rolled out across the site on 12 May 2009, coinciding with the platform’s tenth anniversary. [2] [3]
In April 2013, Allegro changed its brand mark once again. The hand symbol was removed, simplifying the identity to a text-only logotype, while the website itself underwent a significant visual overhaul. [1]
The current identity, formalized in the Allegro Brandbook 2021, is described by the company as a logotype: “a unique text-only typographic treatment of the name of a company.” The brandbook states that the logotype is one of two basic elements identifying the brand, with the other being the orange filling color. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
In July 2022, Allegro filed an application with the Polish Patent Office to register a single-color trademark for the specific orange shade RGB 255/90/0, covering services related to operating an online marketplace platform. The application drew public attention in Poland, with commentators noting that competitors such as Amazon and Shopee also use orange in their branding and could oppose the registration. [5] [6]
The company has previously secured trademark protection for its orange logo, as well as word marks for services such as Allegro Pay, Allegro Smart! and Allegro Lokalnie. [6]
Typography and Design
According to the official Allegro Brandbook 2021, the logo uses a modern typeface chosen to emphasize the brand’s “modern and friendly character.” The brand guidelines specify rules for the basic logotype, its variants, proportions, protective clear space, minimum sizes and permitted usage on different backgrounds, including a closed form and non-uniform background applications. The brandbook also defines a primary font and a system font for broader communications. [4]
