Foxy Bingo is a UK online bingo brand that launched in 2005. Its visual identity is built around an anthropomorphic fox mascot named Foxy, who serves as both the brand character and the central figure in its logo and advertising. The mascot is described as a red fox who wears a purple suit with a wide-lapelled shirt, and has sometimes been shown carrying a cane.[1]
Design and History
Foxy Bingo was founded in 2005 by UK-based online gambling company Cashcade.[2] The fox character has been central to the brand since its early years. In January 2008, after dropping celebrity Katie Price from its advertising, the company said it would renew focus on the “Foxy” character, described as “a man with fox’s head,” which would appear by itself on all promotional material for the brand, both offline and online.[3]
In March 2014, Foxy Bingo, then owned by Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment, appointed The Engine Group to develop a new brand design, with the account led by its direct digital agency Partners Andrews Aldridge.[4]
In January 2015, the brand unveiled a fresh look for the brand and website, backed by a multi-million pound marketing campaign. The updated design brought “a cleaner, crisper feel” to the branding, while Foxy himself received a “slicker, hipper look” featuring a retro purple two-piece suit.[5] The campaign was created by Tricycle London.[6]
In March 2017, the brand underwent a £10 million revamp, with actress Heather Graham revealed as the new face of the fox character. The campaign, created by agency DUKE, was described by DUKE CEO Neil Hughston as an attempt to “inject some grown-up humour to the existing brand identity and do something fresher and bolder for a new audience.”[7]
In November 2022, Foxy Bingo revealed a refreshed brand identity in a new integrated campaign developed in partnership with creative agency Neverland. The campaign was led by a 30-second spot set to the 1981 track “Menergy.”[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The fox character is the defining element of the Foxy Bingo identity. In a 2015 ASA adjudication, Foxy Bingo stated that its fox character “had always been aligned with adult, celebrity mainstream culture and traditional British innuendo,” which they considered intentionally distinguished him and the brand from youth culture. The ASA noted aspects of the fox character’s style, namely his purple coat and dandy walk upright on his hind legs.[9]
The mascot has been described as a “friendly Northern, bingo-loving fox” and a “key differentiator” for the brand.[5] In 2017, the character was described in advertising trade press as “the obnoxious purple-suited, northern-accented fox.”[7]
