Amazon Alexa is the voice assistant developed by Amazon, first introduced alongside the Echo smart speaker in 2015. Its visual identity has evolved from a simple extension of the Amazon wordmark into a standalone brand system with its own speech bubble emblem, and most recently was folded into Amazon’s company-wide 2024 brand refresh.
Design and History
When Alexa launched with the Echo speaker in 2015, its logo was a simple wordmark pairing the Amazon logo with “Alexa” in all lowercase letters, set in a light blue gradient that transitioned from lighter at the top to darker at the bottom.[1]
In 2017, Amazon redesigned the Alexa identity. The Amazon wordmark and its smiling arrow were removed, and the name “Amazon Alexa” was set in a lightweight sans-serif type in dark grey. The new design introduced a standalone emblem: a white speech bubble on a solid blue circular background.[2] The blue circle was widely noted to echo the LED light ring on Echo devices, which glows blue when Alexa is listening.[3] Amazon filed a trademark application for the blue talk bubble design in February 2017.[4]
In May 2024, Amazon launched a comprehensive brand refresh covering more than 50 subsidiary brands, including Alexa. The project was led by design agency Koto, working with Amazon’s internal team Amazon XCM, and took 18 months to complete.[5][6] The refresh updated the Amazon smile logo and created a custom alphabet called Amazon Logo Sans to unify typography across all sub-brands.[5] According to the Type Directors Club, which recognized the project, the new system builds cohesion through signature elements including the Amazon orange, the Smile logo, and a custom Ember Modern font, while Alexa’s adaptation reflects “technological sophistication.”[7]
Following the 2024 refresh, the Alexa wordmark’s color palette shifted from light blue to black, with the lettering slightly refined and set in a bolder sans-serif style, while the Amazon smile arrow remained in place.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The speech bubble emblem introduced in 2017 carries a direct functional meaning: it represents voice interaction and conversation, the core purpose of the Alexa assistant.[2] The blue circular background was designed to resemble the LED ring on Echo speakers, creating a visual link between the logo and the physical device.[2]
Amazon’s official brand guidelines for Alexa specify that the logo may only be displayed in three colors: Alexa Blue (#00CAFF), Squid Ink (#232F3E), or White (#FFFFFF).[8] The Alexa brand guidelines also describe the speech bubble as “an illustrative expression of an utterance,” used to give customers examples of what they can ask Alexa, with white bubbles representing the customer and blue bubbles representing Alexa.[9]
Typography and Design
Amazon’s official guidelines identify Amazon Ember as the master brand font for all Amazon products and services, including Alexa.[10] The Alexa wordmark is set in all lowercase letters.[2]
Amazon’s brand guidelines require that Alexa logos be displayed at their original aspect ratios without stretching or squeezing, and that only official Alexa brand graphics be used to indicate when Alexa is listening.[8]
