Crunchbase is a business intelligence platform that tracks private and public company data, including funding rounds, acquisitions, and executive changes. Its visual identity centers on a simple, text-only wordmark that has evolved alongside the company’s transition from a free wiki-style database to a subscription-based data platform.
Design and History
Crunchbase was founded in 2007 by Michael Arrington as part of TechCrunch, initially created as a database to track startups covered by the technology blog. In 2010, AOL acquired TechCrunch including Crunchbase. AOL later spun out Crunchbase as an independent company in 2015, backed by Emergence Capital with a $6.5 million Series A investment.[1]
In 2016, the company rebranded by removing the camel casing of its name, changing from “CrunchBase” to “Crunchbase,” with the “B” in “Base” rendered as a lowercase letter.[1] That same year, Crunchbase selected the Philadelphia and New York-based agency Zer0 to 5ive to develop its new brand identity and website, which launched at the Disrupt conference in San Francisco on September 11, 2016.[2] Zer0 to 5ive also assisted Crunchbase with positioning, messaging, and the design of creative materials including case studies and display ads.[3]
The rebrand coincided with the launch of Crunchbase Pro, the company’s first subscription product, announced at the same Disrupt event.[4] The new platform design was described as colorful and a significant improvement over its predecessor.[4]
The current Crunchbase identity is a lowercase wordmark presented as a single word in a uniform dark tone.[5] The earlier logo displayed the brand name with a capital “C” and a capital “B” in the CrunchBase spelling.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Crunchbase wordmark is a text-only design that emphasizes information over decoration, aligning with the platform’s focus on data and business intelligence. The name itself combines “Crunch,” nodding to its original context within TechCrunch, with “base,” suggesting storage and structure.[6]
Color sources for the Crunchbase brand vary. Some brand color databases list a teal shade represented by the hex code #2292A7 as the primary brand color,[7] while others identify a palette that includes additional colors such as Buttercup (#F5A623).[8] No official Crunchbase brand guideline document was located in this research to confirm a definitive official color specification.
Typography and Design
The Crunchbase wordmark uses a clean sans-serif typeface with lowercase letterforms.[5] The specific typeface used in the wordmark has not been publicly documented. The lowercase treatment and single-word presentation distinguish the current identity from the earlier two-word, camel-cased version that preceded the 2016 rebrand.[1]
