NordVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Nord Security, a Lithuanian cybersecurity company founded in 2012 by a group of childhood friends led by Tom Okman. The service was launched as the first brand in the Nord Security family, which later expanded to include NordPass, NordLocker, and NordLayer. The NordVPN visual identity has undergone one significant redesign since the service’s introduction, evolving from a dark blue circular emblem to the current lighter, more refined mark.
Design and History
The original NordVPN logo, used from 2012 to 2018, featured a dark blue circle containing a white iceberg with sharp peaks of unequal length. To the right sat a two-part wordmark: “nord” in a semi-bold condensed style with only the first letter capitalized, and “VPN” in heavy uppercase sans-serif letters. The wordmark was split between bright blue and black lettering.
In 2018, NordVPN introduced a redesigned logo that remains in use today. The emblem was made wider, and the iceberg inside the circle received equal-length ends on both sides. The circle was lightened to a brighter blue, while the wordmark became entirely gray. The two-font treatment was replaced with a single semi-bold sans-serif typeface for the full inscription, with “nord” in lowercase (first letter capitalized) and “vpn” in uppercase. This redesign marked the company’s transition to a more mature and adaptable visual system suited to modern digital interfaces.[1]
The current logo file, available through NordVPN’s official brand assets page, is distributed as an SVG file measuring 512 × 111 pixels.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The iceberg motif in the NordVPN emblem is the most distinctive element of the mark. The original logo depicted the iceberg with sharp, uneven peaks, while the 2018 version standardized the ends to equal length. The iceberg imagery aligns with the “Nord” (north) naming and evokes the cold northern landscapes associated with the brand’s Nordic-inspired identity.[1]
Nord Security describes its brand as inspired by “Nordic ideals of confidence, trust, and innovation,” a positioning reflected in the clean, geometric style of the logo.[3]
Typography and Design
The 2018 wordmark uses a single semi-bold sans-serif typeface with heavy letterforms and small internal spacing. The treatment is consistent across the full inscription, with “nord” set in mixed case and “vpn” in uppercase. This unified typography replaced the earlier two-font approach, giving the lockup a cleaner and more cohesive appearance.[1]
The brand color palette centers on blue tones. Brand asset aggregators list the primary blue as #4687FF, with supporting colors including lighter blues such as #8CAEF8 and darker tones like #173FA6.[3] The 2018 redesign replaced the original dark blue circle with a lighter blue and shifted the wordmark from black to gray.[1]
