Sputnik is the international news agency and radio brand of the Russian state media group Rossiya Segodnya. Launched on 10 November 2014, the multimedia brand was created specifically for foreign audiences, with editorial centers in dozens of countries broadcasting and publishing in multiple languages.[1]
Design and History
The Sputnik brand was presented to the public in Moscow on 10 November 2014 by Rossiya Segodnya Director General Dmitry Kiselev and Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan.[1] The name was chosen to evoke the Soviet-era Sputnik satellite, drawing on the positive associations of the historic space achievement.[2]
The official brand guidelines describe the Sputnik sign as a stylized triangle that functions as a page bookmark on one side and as the projected shadow of an orbital space satellite on the other. The triangle, described as the satellite’s shadow projection, is said to symbolize a breakthrough in innovation and to offer perspective in a changing world.[3] The triangular version of the logo combines the sign with the brand name SPUTNIK placed inside it.[4]
The corporate color scheme is black on orange with bold lettering.[5] The tagline “TELLING THE UNTOLD” accompanies the wordmark as the brand’s reporting philosophy.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the official brand guidelines, the Sputnik sign carries a dual meaning. The bookmark shape references the act of marking a page, while the satellite shadow projection connects the mark to the space heritage of the Sputnik name. The guidelines state that the triangle-as-shadow symbolizes a breakthrough in innovation and offers perspective in a changing world.[3]
Typography and Design
The official brand guidelines specify PT Root as the corporate typeface, described as a closed grotesque with ten weight gradations and a variable version.[4] The wordmark uses bold lettering in the black-on-orange scheme.[5]
Anton Stepanov, who joined the Sputnik design center in 2014 as Head of Design at Sputnik News Agency and Radio, has spoken publicly about the brand’s visual identity.[5]
