uCoz is a free website builder and hosting platform developed by the Russian company OOO “Yukoz Media” (uCoz Media), based in Moscow.[1] The service was launched in Russian on October 29, 2005, with an English version following in June 2007.[2] The platform’s visual identity centers on a blue “U” mark, which also serves as the default favicon for all sites created within the system.[3]
Design and History
The uCoz brand underwent a notable naming adjustment in December 2008. The company announced a “light rebranding” that standardized the spelling of the brand name from earlier variations to “uCoz” across all countries. The change was prompted by English-speaking users who naturally wrote the name as “uCoz,” and by the company’s preparation for launching a related project called uNet, which led the team to give the letter “u” a more independent role in the brand.[4]The official blog post from December 2008 also clarified the name’s origin: uCoz is an acronym derived from the words “you cause,” pronounced [ju:] [/kó:z/], and forms part of the slogan “You Cause us to be better.”[4]In May 2015, uCoz redesigned its main website homepage, a change discussed at length by users on the official uCoz community forum. While the discussion focused on the website design rather than a logo change, community members noted that the homepage serves as “the face of the company” and that the new design aligned with contemporary web-building trends.[5]Meaning and Symbolism
The uCoz brand mark features a blue “U” icon, which appears in the browser address bar as the default favicon for all uCoz-created websites.[3] The official uCoz help documentation confirms that all sites in the system use this standard favicon by default, displayed in the browser’s address bar.[6]Brand asset data lists the primary brand color as a shade of blue (hex #498BFA), alongside secondary colors including a yellow tone (hex #FBD83D) and a dark navy (hex #132239).[7] The letter “U” in the mark directly references the brand name and its “you cause” acronym origin.[4]Typography and Design
The uCoz wordmark uses a distinctive capitalization pattern with a lowercase “u” followed by a capital “C” and lowercase “oz,” a spelling the company deliberately adopted in 2008 to eliminate ambiguity about pronunciation and to align with how English-speaking users naturally wrote the name.[4] The brand’s standard favicon, a small square icon typically rendered at 16×16 pixels in ICO format, is applied automatically to every site created on the platform unless the site owner uploads a custom replacement.[6]Logo Index is an independent educational archive covering logos, visual identities and graphic design history.
