The Austin Peay Governors are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Austin Peay State University (APSU) in Clarksville, Tennessee. The athletics visual identity centers on two primary marks: the stylized “AP” monogram, a university-wide symbol since 1977, and the Governor Peay mascot emblem, a cartoon figure of a gentleman with a top hat, monocle, mustache, tie and large lapels that pays homage to former Tennessee governor and university namesake Austin Peay.[1][2]

Design and History

The current athletics identity dates to April 2014, when APSU unveiled a new visual identity series at a press conference in the Dunn Center. The series included an updated primary “AP” logo, a new Governor Peay logo and a fresh wordmark with a contemporary font.[3] The redesign was initiated shortly after Derek van der Merwe was named athletics director in June 2013, and a committee of university staff, local business leaders and alumni was assembled to guide the effort.[3]

The design firm Joe Bosack and Co., based in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, was hired to create the new look. The firm presented six AP logo concepts, seven Governor Peay logo concepts and five wordmark concepts, which were narrowed to three finalists before constituency groups provided feedback.[1][3] The rollout was gradual: all athletic squads were outfitted with the new marks beginning in Fall 2014, with the complete application to fields and courts taking approximately four years.[3]

The “AP” mark itself predates the 2014 refresh. It was created in 1976 by the Nashville-based advertising agency Womack and Criminger, whose Larry Womack was an APSU alumnus, at the direction of APSU President Robert O. Riggs. The logo was unveiled just prior to APSU’s 50th Anniversary celebration in 1977.[1] The 2014 update made subtle adjustments to create a cleaner, more readable mark.[4]

The Governor icon has a longer evolution. According to APSU Athletics, the figure evolved from a jovial, round-headed gentleman in the 1940s and 1950s to a mustachioed, dignified character in the 1980s. The 2014 “new Gov” was described as a modernized, forward-facing gentleman with a stern look, meant to represent a stronger, sleeker upgrade while keeping the base trappings of the iconic figure.[5]

In 2022, the university itself unveiled a redesigned institutional logo. The iconic “AP” remained, but fonts were updated and the words “Clarksville, Tennessee” were added to the visual identity. The designers also added the tri-star from the Tennessee state flag. The redesign was handled in-house by the APSU Office of Public Relations and Marketing graphic design team, which included David Johnson, Beth Rates and Rollow Welch.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Governor Peay mascot emblem carries documented symbolic meaning tied to the Governors Club donor organization. The red coat, top hat, monocle and classic necktie represent the organization’s donation levels, giving donors a personal connection to the mascot’s appearance.[5] Athletics Director van der Merwe said the new assertive Governor Peay logo “does not represent a single person. It represents a campus that needs to rally behind an identity and be very proud of that identity.”[3]

The 2022 university logo added the tri-star from the Tennessee state flag, which the university noted had become a unifying symbol for the state. President Mike Licari specifically wanted the new mark to acknowledge the campus’ physical location in Tennessee, noting that potential students and recruits unfamiliar with Clarksville sometimes wondered if Austin Peay was in Texas.[6]

Typography and Design

The 2014 athletics redesign included a customized typography for use across the athletics department, applied to the updated Governors and “AP” logos as well as specific identities for team sports, the Governors Club and the Peay!Nuts student fan club.[5] The university brand guide identifies the font used to form the athletics branding elements as the “Gvos” font, which is considered part of the athletics department brand identity. The sans serif typeface Gotham was selected to complement Governors Standard, the primary typeface.[7]

The official Austin Peay Athletics colors are Governors Red (hex #C41E3A, PMS 200C), Black (PMS Black) and Silver Gray (hex #ADAFAA, PMS 429C).[8]
