CGE Distribution was a French wholesale distributor of electrical equipment, operating as part of the Sonepar group. The company’s visual identity is notable for its association with Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger, who created the logo during his time at Atelier Frutiger in France.
Design and History
The CGE Distribution logo was designed by Adrian Frutiger, working with the agency Atelier Frutiger, with the design dated to the period between 1979 and 1983.[1] The mark is classified as a logotype with initials, featuring a single letter “D” constructed with curves, lines and outlines.[1] Frutiger, best known for his eponymous typeface and the signage system for Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport, also designed a companion logo for CGE Novelerg, a related energy-sector brand, using a single letter “E” in a similar style during the same period.[2]
The company itself was created on January 1, 1974, and was headquartered in Montrouge, France.[3] In 1991, Sonepar Distribution acquired CGE Distribution in France.[4] The CGE Distribution entity was officially closed on June 1, 2022.[3]
In March 2023, Sonepar announced that the CGE Distribution and Sonepar Connect store brands would be unified under the single Sonepar banner, with roughly 400 points of sale adopting the new signage.[5] The unification was part of a strategic plan to consolidate Sonepar’s generalist distribution network in France under one brand.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The mark is catalogued as a letter-based logotype built around the initial “D,” using curved and outlined forms.[1]
