Federico Grau was a Spanish printing brand whose mark was designed by the Catalan graphic designer Tomás Vellvé in 1968. Vellvé, born in Barcelona in 1927, was a pioneer of graphic design in Spain and worked extensively on posters, calendars, trademarks and typographic alphabets.[1][2]

Design and History

The Federico Grau symbol was originally designed by Tomás Vellvé in 1968.[3] The mark is described as a square, outline-style logo, consistent with the geometric and functional approach common in Vellvé’s graphic output of that period.[3]

Vellvé established himself as an independent professional in 1950 after training in various graphic arts companies, and he devoted himself especially to the graphic creation of posters, calendars and trademarks.[1] His work is generally placed midway between carefully crafted imagery and a clearly rationalist foundation.[1]

Documentary evidence confirms that a printer named Federico Grau was active in Spain around the same period. An archival record from the Real Academia Española, dated 17 June 1969, documents a request from Federico Grau, identified as a printer (“impresor”), seeking the Academy’s help to determine the authorship of some verses.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

No official documentation has been located that describes the intended symbolism or meaning of the Federico Grau mark. The logo is catalogued as a square, outline-style design, but any deeper symbolic interpretation remains undocumented.[3]

Typography and Design

Vellvé was also noted for his typographic work. His “Vellvé type” was awarded the Laus prize in 1971 and was later produced by the Neufville foundry.[1] However, no source confirms which specific letterforms were used in the Federico Grau wordmark itself.
