G. Simmen Schreibmaschinen was a Swiss typewriter brand. Its logo was designed in 1966 by Walter J. Diethelm, a Swiss graphic designer and type designer who ran his own graphics studio in Zumikon near Zurich from 1954 onward.[1][2]
Design and History
Diethelm created the G. Simmen Schreibmaschinen mark in 1966, during a period when he was active as a designer of publications, posters, signets, typefaces, orientation systems and exhibitions.[1][2] The logo is documented as a block-style, rectangular mark associated with the typewriter industry in Switzerland.[2]
Diethelm is best known for the publications “Signet Signal Symbol” and “form + communication,” which he produced with the ABC Verlag, and for the Diethelm Antiqua typeface, which Linotype GmbH in Frankfurt began producing in 1958.[1] His work for G. Simmen Schreibmaschinen fits within his broader practice of designing corporate signets for Swiss and international clients.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
Typography and Design
Diethelm was a trained type designer who created the Diethelm Antiqua typeface, produced by Linotype GmbH in Frankfurt starting in 1958, but no evidence connects this specific typeface to the G. Simmen mark.[1]
