Vereinigte Böhmische Glasindustrie AG (United Bohemian Glass Industry) was a German-administered glass manufacturing company based in Teplice (Teplitz-Schönau), in what is today the Czech Republic. The company was founded in 1940 and incorporated the operations of Josef Inwald AG and Josef Rindskopf’s Söhne Glasfabriken, two established Bohemian glass firms.[1]
Design and History
Documentation of a distinct Vereinigte Böhmische Glasindustrie logo is scarce. The company operated from 1940, during the period of Nazi administration of the Sudetenland, and its product catalogues used the name “Vereinigte Böhmische Glasindustrie A.G.” for glassware previously associated with Josef Inwald.[2] The firm’s annual report for 1940 was published under the name “Vereinigte Böhmische Glasindustrie Aktiengesellschaft Teplitz-Schönau.”[3]
Some sources suggest a connection between the company and German graphic designer Walter Sauer (1912-1994), who created trademarks and logos for numerous companies in the 1950s.[4] Sauer worked as a product designer and graphic artist in Düsseldorf, designing corporate identities, trademarks and seals for businesses, associations and church congregations.[5] However, no verifiable primary source confirms that Sauer designed a logo specifically for Vereinigte Böhmische Glasindustrie, and no documented description of such a mark has been located.
Meaning and Symbolism
Because no reliable documentation of the company’s logo design, its visual elements or its intended symbolism has been found, any claims about geometric construction, color palette or meaning cannot be verified. The company’s identity appears to have been tied primarily to the inherited trademarks and product lines of its constituent firms, particularly Josef Inwald, whose marks included circular stamps with the inscription “INWALD BOHEMIA” and three stars.[6]
