Alamy is a British stock photography platform founded in 1999, offering creative and editorial photos, vectors, 360-degree images and videos from a global community of contributors.[1] The company was acquired by PA Media Group in 2020.[2]
Design and History
In October 2021, Alamy unveiled a new visual identity developed in partnership with the creative agency Phantom.[2] The rebrand reflected Alamy’s focus on the “infinite and diverse opportunities that the ‘blank page’ can have for creatives,” according to the company’s announcement.[3] Emily Shelley, then Managing Director of Alamy, described the identity as empowering customers and partners to “be brave, be bold, and own the blank page.”[2]
The rebrand followed significant growth in 2021 for Alamy among TV and film, and advertising and design clients, and came ahead of major redevelopment work on the alamy.com platform planned for 2022.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 identity combined black and white with a bright green accent color, which the agency described as representing “new beginnings.”[4] The design system also incorporated a “frame” motif, described as a universally recognized symbol of unfinished work.[4]
Typography and Design
Phantom selected a simple, elegant logo as the foundation of the brand, paired with a playful variable typeface intended to convey the “feverish nature of creativity.”[4] The logo appears in variations such as green with a black “a” or black with a white “a,” as noted in discussions among Alamy’s contributor community following the launch.[5]
