Flix is an American premium cable and satellite television network owned by Showtime Networks, a subsidiary of Paramount Global operated through its Paramount Media Networks division. The channel is stylized as FLiX and launched on August 1, 1992, as a single-channel “mini-pay” service. Its programming consists solely of theatrically released motion pictures from the 1970s to the present day, with some films from the 1950s and 1960s. [1]
Design and History
Flix was launched as a low-price, movie-based pay service. In March 1992, Showtime confirmed plans for the service while declining to reveal its name, though cable-industry sources at the time identified “Flix” as the most widely discussed potential moniker. [2]
In August 2000, Flix revamped its on-air look and scheduling strategy. Showtime created a new tagline for the network: “Cool Classics for the Movie Generation.” [3]
Flix has historically operated as a standalone brand. In 2005, Showtime executive vice president Mark Greenberg acknowledged that few consumers knew Flix was brought to them by Showtime, noting that discussions about “Flix by Showtime” cross-promotion had occurred but that the network remained a standalone brand at that time. [4]
On April 1, 2010, Flix and other Showtime multiplex channels began using on-screen logo bugs during all of their programming. [5]
Flix remains part of the Showtime multiplex offering. A subscription to the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME network through a TV provider includes access to SHOWTIME multiplex channels, including TMC and Flix. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Flix’s branding has been tied to its classic movie positioning. The network’s early slogan was “Movies You Grew Up With” (1992-1997), followed by “Cool Classics. For the Movie Generation” (1997-2007). [1] The 2000 tagline “Cool Classics for the Movie Generation” reinforced this focus on older theatrical films. [3]
In Showtime Networks’ on-air channel packaging, Flix was presented with a metallic silver treatment, distinct from Showtime’s red. A Chinese design showcase describing Showtime’s channel branding campaign notes that the red Showtime symbolized passion and core identity, while the silver Flix represented calm and technology. [7] This description comes from a third-party design portfolio and should be treated as an interpretation of the on-air motion graphics rather than official brand documentation.
