Asgard-Verlag Dr. Werner Hippe is a German specialist publisher for medical and dental fee and billing regulations, as well as social law, based in Siegburg near Bonn. The company traces its roots to a publishing house founded in Lübeck on 1 July 1947 under the name “Verlag des Mitteilungsblattes für die Sozialversicherung”. When the licensing requirement lapsed, the firm was renamed “Asgard-Verlag” around 1950. The name choice reflected co-founder Dr. Max Richter’s affinity for Norse mythology, intended to point to the “Nordic” roots of the publishing house’s founding, though it had nothing to do with the publisher’s actual program focus. [1]

Design and History

After the death of the last co-founder, Dr. Max Richter, in summer 1966, Dr. Werner Hippe, who had been the publisher’s production manager since 1963, took over the company. [1] The firm operated under the name Asgard-Verlag Dr. Werner Hippe KG from that point, with its headquarters in Bad Godesberg until 1969 and then in Bonn until 1976, when a new publishing building was erected and occupied in Siegburg. [1] [2]

In 2002, Dr. Werner Hippe withdrew from the operational business, and the company was converted into Asgard-Verlag Dr. Werner Hippe GmbH, remaining in family hands. [1] The publisher celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007. [1]

No verifiable documentation has been found regarding a specific 1969 logo design, an agency named Schulz-Haller, or any particular typographic mark used by the publisher. The publisher’s own history pages describe the company’s naming and development but do not discuss a logo or visual identity program. [1]

Meaning and Symbolism

The only documented symbolic element in the publisher’s identity is its name. “Asgard” is the realm of the gods in Norse mythology, and co-founder Max Richter chose it to reflect the “Nordic” roots of the publishing house’s founding. The publisher’s own history explicitly states that the name has no connection to the actual orientation of the publishing program. [1]
