Audible is an audiobook and spoken-word entertainment service owned by Amazon, founded in 1995 by Don Katz. The company’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases, from early sound-wave motifs to the current orange mark introduced in 2015.
Design and History
Audible launched in 1995 with a wordmark featuring ascending uppercase letters paired with an arc beneath, a form that suggested both a sound wave and an ear. The letterforms grew progressively larger from left to right, evoking amplification. From 1998 to 2002, a jagged waveform replaced the arc as Audible moved to a lowercase sans-serif wordmark with “.com” appended, using a blue and olive palette. The graphic wave element was dropped entirely between 2002 and 2010, leaving a standalone wordmark in a saturated neon green.[1]
A new symbol appeared alongside the wordmark around 2010: a stylized open book whose pages double as ascending sound-wave curves, rendered in a tricolor palette of yellow, red, and dark purple. This “wave book” logo is credited to designer Cristiano Andreotti, whose portfolio also includes the Lockheed Martin “forward & upward star” and the Microsoft butterfly.[2]
In June 2015, Audible adopted a new brand identity. The redesign refined the existing logo, reducing the book’s fold angle, widening letter spacing, and consolidating the palette from four colors to black and orange.[3] The current mark features three concentric curves forming the brand icon in Amazon orange alongside a black wordmark, with an “an amazon company” byline making the corporate relationship explicit.[1]
The animated version of the logo, described as an orange chevron that opens like a book, was created by the London agency Fold7 as part of a broader campaign.[4] Fold7 lists Audible among its clients for brand platform work.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current Audible icon combines two ideas: an open book and sound waves. The three concentric curves suggest audio emanating from the pages, linking the act of reading with the experience of listening. The orange color aligns Audible with Amazon’s brand palette while distinguishing the service as a separate consumer brand.[1]
In 2025, the design agency DixonBaxi partnered with Audible’s in-house team to create a visual identity system called “The Reveal,” described as a bold symbol of discovery rooted in the Audible logo. The system expands the logo into a broader brand language expressing “the joy of discovery” across the user interface and other touchpoints.[6]
Typography and Design
Audible’s current wordmark uses lowercase letterforms in black, paired with the orange icon. The 2015 redesign widened the spacing between letters compared to the previous version.[3] Brand color data lists the primary orange as #F7991C (referred to as “Tree Poppy”) with black as the secondary color.[7]
Audible’s official press assets page provides downloadable logo files for publication use, subject to the company’s trademark usage guidelines.[8]
