The Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) was a division of the German media company Bertelsmann, established in 1987 to combine the music label activities of Bertelsmann, including the RCA, Arista, and Ariola labels.[1][2] The division operated until October 1, 2008, when Bertelsmann completed the sale of the majority of its assets to Sony Corporation of America.[3]
Design and History
BMG’s visual identity during its two decades of operation was built around the bold “BMG” acronym. The mark appeared in two principal forms: a plain “BMG” treatment and a version with “Bertelsmann Music Group” written underneath it, with the full-name version used as the company logo.[4]
The company filed a trademark for the BMG mark on October 13, 1987, covering prerecorded audio and video discs and tapes featuring music.[5] The mark was registered by Bertelsmann Music Group LLC, the entity that owned the brand.
In 2004, BMG entered a joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment, forming Sony BMG Music Entertainment.[1] In August 2008, Sony acquired Bertelsmann’s 50 percent stake, and the company became Sony Music Entertainment on January 1, 2009.[2]
Following the sale, Bertelsmann launched a new music company, BMG Rights Management, in 2008. This new entity used a “BMG” logo without the triangle that had accompanied the earlier BMG mark.[6]
In February 2025, the current BMG company introduced a refreshed brand identity developed with the global brand consultancy Wolff Olins. The company stated that “the BMG logo remains the same,” with the refresh adding a new dynamic symbol and an updated color scheme rather than replacing the wordmark itself.[7][8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The BMG label identity was associated with a small red triangle that appeared alongside the acronym on releases from the BMG label and its related labels.[6]
For the 2025 refresh of the current BMG company, the new brand hero colors carry explicit documented meaning. The color “Midnight,” described as a deep emerald-blue, “represents parent company Bertelsmann’s enduring commitment to music and BMG’s independent strength.” The accent colors “Limelight,” inspired by the iconic stage spotlight, and “Platinum,” along with other metallic tones, “pay tribute to the industry’s highest achievements.”[7]
Typography and Design
The mark’s visual characteristics are documented only through trademark records and archival descriptions of its general appearance, including the presence of the red triangle element and the two principal layout variants.[4][6]
