Claudius Verlag is a Munich-based book publisher and part of the Evangelischer Presseverband für Bayern (EPV), the central Protestant media house in Bavaria. The publisher was founded in 1954 as the Lucas Cranach Verlag and was renamed Claudius Verlag in 1965, taking its name from the 18th-century German poet and writer Matthias Claudius (1740–1815).[1][2]
Design and History
The publisher’s logo was designed in 1986 by Werner Richter, a graphic designer based in Munich.[3] The mark is described as an outline-style symbol, and the publisher itself emphasizes that its books are known for quality “inhaltlich und gestalterisch” (in content and design).[2]
The publisher’s identity is closely tied to its namesake, Matthias Claudius, whose aphorism “Sage nicht alles, was du weißt, aber wisse alles, was du sagst” (“Do not say everything you know, but know everything you say”) is quoted by the publisher as a guiding principle.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
While the exact symbolic meaning of the logo is not widely documented, the publisher’s Christian orientation is central to its identity. Claudius Verlag was originally established as a platform for theological publications within the Protestant press association, and its program continues to focus on religion, spirituality, and society.[2] The publisher states that its Christian character is reflected in its titles to this day.[2]
