Heibon Shuppan

Heibon Shuppan was a Japanese publishing company founded in 1945 and renamed Magazine House in 1983. Graphic designer Tadashi Ohashi contributed to its publications, including the WINK OWL mascot for Heibon Punch.

Heibon Shuppan (平凡出版) was a Japanese publishing company founded in 1945 as the partnership firm Jinjaisha (凡人社), later renamed Heibon Shuppan, and ultimately became Magazine House in 1983. The company is best known for launching magazines such as Shūkan Heibon, Heibon Punch, an・an, POPEYE, and BRUTUS. Its visual identity is most closely associated with the work of graphic designer Tadashi Ohashi (大橋正), who contributed to the company’s publications from their earliest days.

Design and History

Tadashi Ohashi was a Japanese graphic designer and illustrator active from the prewar period through the postwar decades. After World War II, he worked independently and, at the request of Shimizu, began drawing the cover of the magazine Heibon from its first issue. When the magazine faced financial crisis, Ohashi reportedly provided his own housing funds to save it. He became a member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club in 1965 and received ADC awards and the Mainichi Design Award. [1]

Ohashi’s most documented logo work for the company is the “WINK OWL” mark, an owl mascot created for the men’s weekly magazine Heibon Punch, which launched in 1964. According to MoonStar, the shoe manufacturer that collaborated with the magazine, WINK OWL was designed by Ohashi, who was also serving as a consulting designer for MoonStar at the time. The mark was used on co-branded PUNCH shoes released in 1966. [2]

Beyond the WINK OWL, Ohashi’s broader relationship with the company is documented through his cover illustrations for Heibon magazine. The company’s own history page notes that Ohashi also created the cover illustration for the first issue of Croissant magazine, which launched in 1977. [3]

In 1983, the company changed its name from Heibon Shuppan to Magazine House. [3] The name change reflected the company’s shift toward a magazine-focused publishing strategy. [4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The WINK OWL mark, as its name suggests, depicts an owl winking. The owl was adopted as an “idol mark” for Heibon Punch, a magazine aimed at young men. The mark’s design and its specific symbolic intent beyond the name are not documented in available sources. [2]

Typography and Design

While Ohashi’s WINK OWL is well documented, no reliable source confirms that Ohashi designed a corporate logo for Heibon Shuppan itself in 1965, nor is there verifiable documentation of a company-wide geometric mark from that period. The company’s magazine title logos were designed by other figures: art director Seiichi Horiuchi created the title logos for an・an, POPEYE, BRUTUS, and Olive, which remain in use today. [5] The POPEYE logo specifically was created by Horiuchi in 1976. [6]
