The New York Times Books imprint, also known as Times Books, is the book publishing arm of The New York Times Company. The imprint’s visual identity is closely tied to the newspaper’s own branding, reflecting its parent organization’s name and reputation rather than a standalone graphic symbol.

Design and History

Times Books began as the New York Times Book Company in 1969, when The New York Times Company purchased Quadrangle Books, a Chicago publishing house founded in 1959.[1] The imprint’s name was later shortened to Times Books.

The most significant documented event in the imprint’s visual identity history occurred in 1984, when The New York Times licensed the Times Books logo and trademark to Random House.[2] This licensing arrangement lasted 15 years. In January 2000, following the expiration of that agreement, The New York Times reclaimed the Times Books imprint trademark from Random House.[2] A spokesperson for The New York Times at the time described the trademark as “part of our arsenal,” noting the company was evaluating how it would be used.[2]

Later that year, The New York Times Co. and Holtzbrinck Publishers reached a multiyear agreement to relaunch the Times Books imprint as an imprint of Henry Holt.[3] The Library of Congress confirms that the Times Books imprint, formerly associated with Random House, became associated with Henry Holt & Co. in 2000.[4] Henry Holt’s official publisher page describes Times Books as “a publishing partnership between The New York Times and Henry Holt and Company.”[5]

Because the imprint’s name is derived directly from the parent newspaper, the Times Books wordmark functions as a typographic extension of The New York Times brand. The imprint does not appear to use a distinct pictorial colophon or symbol separate from its name-based logotype.

Meaning and Symbolism

The Times Books identity derives its meaning primarily from its association with The New York Times newspaper. The imprint name itself signals the editorial authority and journalistic heritage of its parent organization. No documented symbolic elements, such as a crest, emblem, or icon, have been identified for the Times Books imprint in available sources.
