W. Girardet Buchverlag was the book-publishing arm of the Essen-based printing and publishing house W. Girardet, founded in 1865 by bookbinder Wilhelm Girardet. The company began as a bookbindery and grew into a major German printing and newspaper operation, with the book division publishing technical and professional titles under the imprint “W. Girardet” in Essen.[1][2]

Design and History

Documented visual evidence of a distinct W. Girardet Buchverlag logo from 1973 is scarce in available sources. The publishing house operated as part of the larger W. Girardet KG, which in 1973 merged its Wuppertal, Düsseldorf and Krefeld newspapers under the umbrella title “Westdeutsche Zeitung.”[3] The book division continued publishing technical reference works and textbooks from Essen during this period, including titles in the Girardet-Taschenbücher series.[4]

In 1983, the book publishing division was transferred to the Cornelsen group, becoming “Cornelsen Verlag Schwann Girardet GmbH & Co. KG.”[1] The Essen printing and publishing company itself filed for insolvency in June 1988.[5]

No designer, agency or specific design documentation for a 1973 W. Girardet Buchverlag logo has been located in the available research. The imprint appears to have relied on typographic identification consistent with mid-century German technical publishing practice, but specific visual details cannot be verified from current sources.
