Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag was a Viennese publishing house active from the late 1940s through the 1990s, known for trade, vocational and legal publications. The company was founded in 1946 by Eduard Strauß and became part of the Österreichischer Bundesverlag (ÖBV) group in 1983.[1][2] The firm was registered in the Austrian commercial register under the name Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag Gesellschaft m.b.H. with its seat in Vienna.[3]

Design and History

The Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag symbol was originally designed in 1948, according to a logo archive that categorizes the mark as a circle-shaped, weave-style monogram.[4] The publisher was already active under this name by 1947 and 1948, issuing works such as Der Einheitskontenrahmen für die österreichische Wirtschaft (1947) and the multi-volume legal series Das Österreichische Recht (from 1948).[5][6]

In 1998, Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag was merged with the ÖBV Pädagogischer Verlag and Hölder-Pichler-Tempsky to form the öbv & hpt Verlagsgesellschaft.[1][7] The company was formally deleted from the Austrian commercial register on 1 July 1998 following a deregistration application.[3] The Vienna History Wiki notes that the Österreichischer Gewerbeverlag no longer exists as a separate entity.[1]

Meaning and Symbolism

[4] Without primary documentation from the publisher or its designer, any deeper symbolic reading would be speculative.
