SportsNet New York, commonly abbreviated as SNY, is a regional sports network based in New York City that serves as the official television home of the New York Mets. The network launched on March 16, 2006, and its visual identity centers on a simple blue and white “SNY” wordmark that has remained consistent since before the channel’s debut.
Design and History
The SNY logo was unveiled in September 2005, several months before the network’s launch, at an event held at the network’s new studios in the Time-Life Building in midtown Manhattan. The logo was introduced alongside the studio designs as part of the network’s launch preparations.[1]
From the outset, the logo was described as a blue and white “SNY” mark that deliberately avoided any visual connection to the Mets’ familiar interlocking “NY” insignia. A New York Times report from September 2005 noted that the logo “makes no use of the familiar, 43-year-old design of the Mets’ ‘NY,'” reflecting the network’s positioning as a broader New York sports outlet rather than a Mets-specific channel.[2]
The network’s name itself was described in the same report as “a muted, generic name that says almost nothing,” with the name coming from Comcast, which operated several other regional sports networks under the “SportsNet” banner.[2]
SNY has maintained the core “SNY” wordmark since launch. During Mets broadcasts, the network has used variations of the logo in its on-screen scoreboard graphics, including a “SNY HD” version for high-definition telecasts. Games simulcast on WPIX replaced the SNY logo with the PIX11 logo in the scoreboard.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
Documented commentary on the logo’s meaning is limited. The New York Times report from the network’s pre-launch period characterized the logo primarily by what it did not do: it did not reference the Mets’ established “NY” insignia, signaling the network’s intention to cover a range of New York sports beyond its anchor team.[2] The network’s current description identifies it as covering the Mets, Jets and “all things New York sports,” consistent with a deliberately broad identity.[4]
Typography and Design
The SNY wordmark uses a bold sans-serif treatment of the three letters, rendered in blue and white. No designer or agency attribution for the logo has been publicly documented, and no official color specifications or typography details have been published by the network. The logo has remained visually consistent since its 2005 unveiling, with no documented redesign events.
