BBC Alba is the Scottish Gaelic-language television channel operated as a partnership between MG Alba and the BBC. The channel launched on 19 September 2008, with MG Alba and the BBC announcing the service’s name and launch date the previous month. [1]
Design and History
BBC Alba’s visual identity is tied closely to the wider BBC brand system. In October 2021, the BBC introduced a refreshed corporate logo across its services, including BBC Alba. The updated BBC logo features the three blocks containing the letters BBC placed slightly further apart, with the lettering set in the corporation’s own Reith font, replacing the Gill Sans typeface used since 1997. [2] The new logos and graphics began appearing on BBC Alba, along with BBC One, Two, Four and BBC Scotland, from 20 October 2021. [3]
The 2021 update was part of a broader BBC rebranding effort that began in 2017, when the BBC commissioned type foundry Dalton Maag to create its bespoke Reith typeface. [4] The BBC said the change was motivated by audiences describing its services as “old-fashioned” and “out of date,” and the use of the in-house font eliminated licensing costs associated with Gill Sans. [4]
Prior to the 2021 BBC-wide refresh, BBC Alba received its own channel-specific update in September 2018, timed to the channel’s 10th anniversary. The new look was created by the independent production company Corran Media. [5] The 2018 refresh introduced new idents and updated the “Alba” text to the BBC Reith Sans font. [6]
Typography and Design
BBC Reith, named after the BBC’s first Director-General Lord Reith, is a bespoke typeface family designed by Dalton Maag. It includes coordinated weights in both sans and serif, plus matching italics, and was designed to carry the BBC identity across media from billboards to mobile screens. [4] In the 2021 logo update, the scale of the letters was adjusted down slightly to fit better within the blocks. [4]
