TV 2 Nyheter is the 24-hour Norwegian-language news channel operated by the Norwegian broadcaster TV 2. The channel launched on 15 January 2007 as TV 2 Nyhetskanalen, Norway’s first national television news channel, and was renamed TV 2 Nyheter in September 2022 as part of a broader brand architecture change at TV 2. Its main newsroom is located in Bergen, where TV 2 is headquartered. [1] [2] [3]
Design and History
The channel’s visual identity is tied directly to the parent TV 2 brand. In January 2021, TV 2 announced its largest visual modernization since the company’s launch in 1992, replacing the long-standing multicolored “2” logo with a new mark developed by the Scandinavian design agency Bold. The new logo was described by TV 2 as a “unifying symbol” intended to reflect the broadcaster’s evolution from a single linear channel into a digital content universe. [4] [5] [6]
The 2021 rebrand was rolled out gradually across TV 2’s platforms. The streaming service TV 2 Sumo was renamed TV 2 Play and, together with the main channel and TV2.no, was first to receive the new design. Other channels and platforms were scheduled for modernization “fortløpende” (continuously) afterward. [5]
On 15 September 2022, TV 2 renamed its main channel to TV 2 Direkte and its news channel from TV 2 Nyhetskanalen to TV 2 Nyheter. TV 2 CEO Olav T. Sandnes said the name changes were part of the brand work the media house had been conducting since 2021, and that they were intended to make it easier for viewers to distinguish between TV 2’s services while keeping “TV 2” as the master brand. [2] [7]
The news channel’s on-screen identity follows the TV 2 master brand system introduced in 2021. The channel continues to broadcast news continuously around the clock, with main newscasts at 18:30 and 21:00. [8]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 TV 2 logo was created by Bold as “a unifying symbol that unites 2 parts, 2 worlds, 2 sides into one new experience,” according to the agency’s award entry. [6] TV 2’s own press material described the new visual identity as representing “the breadth of today’s TV 2 in a completely new way,” reflecting the company’s shift from a single broadcast channel to a multi-platform digital media house.
