CNN Portugal is a Portuguese-language news channel launched on 22 November 2021 through a partnership between Media Capital and CNN International Commercial (CNNIC). The channel operates across television, digital and social platforms, with its website at CNNPortugal.pt. [1]
Design and History
The CNN Portugal logo was revealed by Media Capital on 21 July 2021, ahead of the channel’s launch later that year. [2] According to Media Capital, the logo follows the colors, dimensions and typography used by the CNN network across all of its operations worldwide, in keeping with the international brand standards of CNN. [3]
The underlying CNN logo was created in 1980 by Anthony Guy Bost and has remained practically unchanged for over 40 years. [3] Media Capital described the design as “iconic” and “recognized throughout the world,” calling it the symbol with the greatest influence and power in the field of news broadcasting. [2]
The channel replaced TVI 24, the previous news channel operated by Media Capital, which also owns TVI. [4] Combining the words “CNN” and “Portugal” was described by Media Capital as a significant step in the operationalization of the channel in Portugal and as symbolizing the beginning of the partnership between the two organizations. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Media Capital’s official statement, the red color in the CNN logo symbolizes the passion and courage of the news channel, while the white of the letters represents perfection and truth. [3] The same symbolism was reiterated in the company’s communications to the Portuguese press. [2]
