TRT Belgesel (TRT Documentary) is the documentary channel of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), Turkey’s public broadcaster. The channel began broadcasting in 2009 and operates as one of TRT’s thematic channels.[1]
Design and History
TRT Belgesel launched its current visual identity in January 2019, when the channel renewed both its content and its logo. The new logo was unveiled for the first time at a promotional event held at Sirkeci Railway Station in Istanbul on January 8, 2019.[2][3]
The 2019 rebrand accompanied a major programming overhaul. TRT General Manager and Board Chairman İbrahim Eren described the logo and brand identity as “a result,” emphasizing that the channel’s content was the primary focus of the renewal effort. He noted that TRT had been working on the TRT Belgesel project for more than two years and that nearly 90 percent of the new programming was domestically produced.[2]
The new identity was introduced alongside the slogan “İnsanı anlamak hayatı anlamaktır” (“To understand people is to understand life”), which the channel adopted for its new broadcasting period.[4] The launch event featured documentaries shot in 38 countries, comprising 44 productions and 400 episodes of human stories.[3]
Prior to the 2019 renewal, the channel’s on-air identity had used a different logo treatment. One source describes the earlier logo as featuring “TRT” written in white on a black background alongside “belgesel” written in black on a yellow background.[5] The channel also removed the “HD” designation from its logo on November 28, 2018, ahead of the full rebrand.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
TRT General Manager İbrahim Eren framed the 2019 rebrand within the channel’s documentary mission, stating: “We refuse to look at ourselves through a mirror held by someone else. Because we understand the sorrow behind a silent face. Because we are their voice. We will now be the voice of the voiceless in many different geographies, the witness of what happens, the name on screen of pain, sorrow, hope, in short, of life itself.”[3]
No official documentation has been found describing specific symbolic meanings for the colors or graphic elements of the current TRT Belgesel logo. The channel’s official website describes its mission in general terms, inviting viewers to “discover” the world through its documentaries, but does not provide a detailed explanation of the logo’s visual components.[7]
Typography and Design
The logo was presented as part of a broader brand identity renewal, but the TRT news release announcing the change does not name a designer or agency.[2]
