TRT World is the English-language international news channel of Turkey’s public broadcaster, Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT). The channel began test broadcasts on May 18, 2015, and its website launched in beta on May 1 of that year, ahead of the full network launch in the last quarter of 2015.[1][2]
Design and History
TRT World’s visual identity was introduced alongside the channel’s launch in 2015. The logo is a typographic wordmark that combines the “TRT” acronym with the word “World.” The mark was designed to carry multiple elements of the brand’s DNA, according to TRT Deputy Director General Ibrahim Eren, who described the logo’s features during the test broadcast launch ceremony.[3]
The new TRT international logo, first seen on TRT World, was subsequently adopted across other TRT networks, including TRT Arabi, TRT Haber, TRT Turk, TRT Kurdi, TRT Spor, TRT Avaz, and TRT’s main national channel TRT1, as part of a modernisation strategy across TRT networks.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
TRT World selected turquoise as its corporate color.[3] The logo’s design incorporates several symbolic elements explained by TRT Deputy Director General Ibrahim Eren:
- The large dot in the foreground of the word “World” appears in motion graphics as the integration of hundreds of particles, depicting the channel’s belief in global representation.[3]
- In the channel’s visuals, particles symbolizing different colors and languages from around the world come together to form meaningful wholes.[3]
- During motion, the “O” letter, composed of two halves surrounding the dot, rotates counterclockwise. This rotation references Turkey’s social heritage and emphasizes the combination of East and West.[3]
Typography and Design
The TRT World logo is a typographic wordmark featuring the “TRT” acronym alongside the word “World.” The design places a prominent dot within the “World” lettering, which serves as a central visual element in the channel’s motion graphics.[3] The identity was designed to work across the channel’s on-air presentation, digital platforms, and print materials, with a deliberately simple screen and color selection.[3]
For TRT World’s sub-brands, including Forum, World Citizen, Research Centre, and Academy, separate visual identities were developed by external design agencies. Istanbul-based agency Finar prepared logotype and identity designs for these sub-brands, creating a color-differentiated brand architecture system for print and digital media.[5] The agency Omerli also documented work on a brand architecture project for the same sub-brands, developing logos, color palettes, and typography while maintaining a connection to the main TRT World brand.[6]
