The CFA Institute, the global not-for-profit association of investment professionals, introduced a new visual identity in 2024. Created by the design consultancy Elmwood New York, the refreshed brand system centers on a distinctive aperture symbol intended to communicate the organization’s prestigious identity and portfolio across multiple brand touchpoints.[1]

Design and History

The 2024 rebrand was framed as a “brand-lift project” aimed at refreshing the visual architecture of the CFA Institute and reminding stakeholders of its positive impact in the investment world.[2] Elmwood New York, the agency behind the work, described the challenge as preserving the organization’s revered status while modernizing it to engage a new generation of investment professionals.[3]

The aperture icon serves as the parent-brand emblem across high-level communications and events, and forms part of a wider design system that flexes with a new brand architecture.[1] The work was honored at the Graphis Design Awards.[1]

Prior to this refresh, the CFA Institute had unveiled a new logo in 2012 to mark the 50th anniversary of the CFA Program. That mark was designed to symbolize the global community of investment professionals centered around a core of ethical best practice.[4] The 2012 identity redesign was undertaken with the help of the New York firm Chermayeff & Geismar.[5] Partner and designer Sagi Haviv is credited among the designers of the CFA Institute logo at that firm.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The 2024 aperture device is described as a dynamic shape that can open and close, acting as a metaphor for the big-vision potential of a career in investment.[3] The aperture is made up of bands of closed stripes, which are intended to reflect individual agency and the small decisions that the CFA Institute empowers its members to make every day. These micro-effects feed into the open center of the aperture, symbolizing the profound effect that personal ethics and professionalism can have in driving transformative economic change.[1]
