The 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, a football club based in the Leipzig district of Probstheida, carries a visual identity rooted in the blue and yellow colors of the city of Leipzig. The club’s current crest is a circular emblem featuring a yellow leather ball on a blue background, surrounded by the club’s name in lettering, with a star positioned above it.[1]
Design and History
The club’s history is complex, involving multiple name changes and reorganizations. The original VfB Leipzig, founded in 1893, was dissolved after World War II. Following several transformations, the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig was established on January 20, 1966, from the football section of SC Leipzig.[1] The name “Lokomotive” was tied to the East German state railway company, a common practice in the Soviet-aligned sports system where clubs were associated with state industries.[2]
In 1991, following German reunification, the club reverted to the name VfB Leipzig. Financial troubles led to two insolvencies, and in 2004 the club was struck from the register. A new 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig had already been founded on December 10, 2003, and continued the club’s activities.[1] In October 2021, the VfB Leipzig merged with the 1. FC Lok Leipzig, formally uniting the two lineages.[3]
Following this merger, the DFB approved the club’s request to display a star above its crest in April 2022, honoring the three German championships won by VfB Leipzig in 1903, 1906, and 1913.[3] The star was officially presented to the club by DFB President Bernd Neuendorf at the Bruno-Plache-Stadion.[4]
Since its re-establishment in 2003, the club faced a significant hurdle: the trademark rights to its emblem were not held by the club itself. This meant licensing fees had to be paid for fan merchandise and other uses. In May 2015, the club reached an out-of-court settlement with the previous rights holder, Manfred Jansen, to regain full ownership of the emblem’s trademark rights.[5]
In 2016, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special jubilee logo. Fans were invited to submit designs, and the winning entry incorporated the number 50 with the Lok logo in the zero and a golden subtitle reading “1966-2016.”[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s colors are blue and yellow, which are the traditional colors of the city of Leipzig.[2] The current crest displays a yellow leather ball against a blue background, encircled by the club’s name in lettering, with a star above it.[1] The star commemorates the three national championships won by the club’s predecessor, VfB Leipzig.[3]
