HADEKA, short for Handelszentrale Deutscher Kaufhäuser (also styled HaDeKa), was a German textile purchasing cooperative founded in 1886 by major clothing and textile trading firms. The organization operated as a buying association for department stores, with headquarters in Berlin and Chemnitz before 1945, and later in Frankfurt am Main. The cooperative existed until the late 1990s. [1] [2]
Design and History
Documented visual material for HADEKA is limited to a surviving advertising stamp (Reklamemarke) held in the archive of the Landesgeschichtliche Vereinigung für die Mark Brandenburg in Berlin. The stamp is a horizontal, colored lithograph showing a frontal view of the company building at Am Köllnischen Park 1 in Berlin-Mitte, viewed from the west. The lower half of the stamp is printed with the centered text: “Geschäftshaus der | HANDELSCENTRALE | DEUTSCHER | KAUFHÄUSER | E. G. m. b. H. | Berlin S. O. 16.” A second version of the same stamp exists in different colors but is otherwise identical. [1]
This stamp predates the 1970s and reflects an earlier era of corporate identity, using an architectural illustration rather than a standalone abstract symbol. No reliable documentation has been found describing a separate geometric logo mark used by HADEKA in the 1970s, nor any record of a designer or agency responsible for such a mark. Claims about a minimalist 1970s redesign cannot be verified from available sources.
Meaning and Symbolism
The documented stamp emphasizes the organization’s physical headquarters building, presenting the company’s name in full rather than relying on the HADEKA abbreviation. The building imagery served to identify the cooperative’s central business location in Berlin. No documented symbolic meaning, color rationale, or design intent beyond this architectural representation has been found in available sources. [1]
